Roack Beach
Rock Beach, also known as Promenade Beach, is a famous coastal area in Pondicherry, India, known for its rocky shoreline and scenic views. Unlike sandy beaches, it's characterized by large black granite boulders, making it ideal for strolls, sunrises, and photos rather than swimming or sunbathing. It is situated in the French Quarter, surrounded by historic architecture, art galleries, and cafes
Characteristics of rock beaches
- Formation: They are created where strong waves and currents repeatedly hit landmasses, causing rocks and pebbles to break off and accumulate along the shore.
- Composition: The sediment can range from small, smooth pebbles and shingle to large boulders, depending on the rock type and the intensity of the wave action.
- Profile: Many rock or "shingle" beaches have a steeper profile than sandy beaches because water easily drains through the porous surface, which reduces the backwash erosion that would otherwise create a gentler slope.
- Ecosystem: The unique environment provides habitats for hardy coastal plants and marine organisms that can cling to the rocky surfaces.
